Message from General Washington to his Troops in New York in 1777 as 150 British Warships Sailed into the Harbor
“The time is now near at hand which must probably determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves . . . The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army . . . Let us therefore animate and encourage each other, and show the whole world, that a freeman contending for liberty on his own ground is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth.”
We celebrate today, America’s Independence Day, because we are the unborn millions who these men fought and died to give the greatest gift of all – Liberty! We celebrate our Liberty, and individual freedom, and the prosperity that our form of government – not Kings or Monarchs or Dictators – has given to us based on the actions of our forefathers 243 years ago.
While too many try to diminish the significance of what the founding of America has meant, not just to Americans but to the world, they cannot succeed in their efforts. What the men and women who dared to found our nation did in 1776 changed the world forever and for the better.
Today we show our appreciation by remembering and celebrating all the benefits that have come to us as a direct results of their sacrifices for the radical idea that government should serve the people; that the people can govern themselves; that rights are “self evident” and are given by God not man; that a combination of free market capitalism and individual property rights is the only way that man can be truly free and exercise his/her liberty in a free society.
Today, we, like Washington and his men, now face a powerful regressive global force that intends to wipe our sovereign nation off the map, to rewrite our history and discard the gifts our forefathers gave us. They intend to re-impose the power of the state over the rights and liberty of the individual. It is they who wish to police our speech, control our every action, control even our thoughts. Today, it is YOU who now stands in the boots of Washington and his men, and it is YOU upon which “the fate of unborn millions will now depend.” I call upon you to use today to “animate and encourage each other, and show the whole world, that a freeman contending for liberty on his own ground is superior to any slavish mercenary on earth” – including the Communist/Socialist/Leftist in our own country!
As Franklin said after signing the new Constitution “It’s a Republic . . . if you can keep it!” You and I will decide in the years to come if we can keep it or not. Remember that as you celebrate our Independence today!
